Portions of Taipa Village will be closed to vehicular traffic from midday to 7:00 p.m. daily during the upcoming Labour Day holiday, authorities announced this week. The move aims to enhance the area’s accessibility for visitors during one of China’s busiest travel periods.
The temporary pedestrianisation will be in effect from May 1 through May 5, coinciding with the five-day “golden week” holiday, which typically brings a surge of mainland Chinese tourists to Macao. Local businesses often report a significant uptick in activity during this period.
According to officials, the traffic restrictions have received widespread support from residents and business owners in the historic village. One local entrepreneur told public broadcaster TDM that the pedestrian zone would help attract more tourists, noting that without such measures, “it’s very difficult to attract tourists here.”
A detailed map outlining the specific streets affected by the traffic restrictions has been made available online, along with information on temporary adjustments to the bus schedule and other public transport services.
The Labour Day initiative follows similar measures implemented during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, and authorities are now considering making partial pedestrianisation a regular feature during peak tourism seasons.
Taipa Village, known for its blend of colonial-era architecture and traditional Portuguese and Chinese influences, has long been a popular destination for both tourists and residents. The government hopes that increased walkability will further enhance its appeal during major holidays.
