Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, online reviews, and recommendations from friends, are changing the way people approach their holidays. For some, these digital resources have transformed vacations into a regimented checklist of must-do activities, especially for Type A travellers.
While there’s no denying the advantages of being an organised traveller, some argue that an over-planned trip can detract from the true joy of a holiday. Megan Virgo, a freelance travel writer for the Irish Daily Mail, spoke with Newstalk Breakfast about how too much planning can “suck the fun” out of the travel experience.
Virgo explained that spontaneity often leads to the most memorable moments. “Sometimes you have to be spontaneous, and the best travel experiences happen when you don’t have a plan,” she said. “The expectation versus reality is a big factor. Just because a restaurant has great reviews doesn’t mean it’s for you. You might get to that famous cocktail bar in London only to find it overcrowded and overpriced. We’ve all been there.”
The rise of social media-driven travel recommendations can sometimes lead to unrealistic expectations. While Virgo acknowledges the benefits of thorough planning, she cautioned against over-scheduling. “There’s a lot to be said for being a Type A traveller — yes, you should keep track of your flights, have an idea of where you’re going, and inform someone of your whereabouts for safety. But if you plan everything, you miss out on those hidden gems that make for better travel moments. These moments often occur when you least expect them.”
Virgo also noted that for some, the pressure to visit popular sites can be overwhelming, particularly with the pervasive influence of TikTok trends. “It depends on the person you are,” she said. “I know friends who would have FOMO if they missed out on landmarks or must-see spots. But I’m content to arrive in a city, wander around, and maybe stumble upon a place that could be the next viral spot.”
In terms of travel dynamics, Virgo pointed out the contrast in travel styles within families. While her father meticulously plans every detail of their vacations, she and her mother prefer a more laid-back approach when traveling together.
Ultimately, whether meticulously planned or unstructured, the key to a memorable trip may lie in the balance between expectation and surprise.
