As the first school term draws to a close, Cape Town’s pools and beaches are gearing up for an exciting and safe holiday break, offering a final opportunity to enjoy the outdoors before winter sets in.
The last day of the first school term is on 28 March, with the second term starting on 8 April. In preparation, the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has adjusted the operating hours of its community swimming pools to accommodate the school holidays.
Starting 31 March, community pools will be open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, providing ample time for residents to enjoy the autumn sun and cool off in the water.
Beachgoers are also in for a safe and fun experience, with lifeguards on duty daily from 10:00 to 18:00. However, safety remains a shared responsibility. Bathers are advised to stick to lifeguard-patrolled areas, remain vigilant for rip currents, and avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol.
Some beaches, including Clifton 1st-3rd, have lifeguards on duty but do not feature designated safe swimming zones. In contrast, beaches such as Fish Hoek and Muizenberg have clearly marked safe swimming areas, so bathers should be sure to check the conditions before entering the water.

Francine Higham, the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, has called on all beachgoers to follow safety guidelines to ensure a fun and safe holiday experience for everyone.
