Agni Deo Singh Urges Employers to Honor Easter Public Holiday Pay

by Bella

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has called on employers to ensure compliance with public holiday pay regulations for workers during the Easter holiday period.

In a statement issued today, Singh emphasized that workers who are required to work during the Easter public holidays are entitled to fair compensation under the Employment Relations Act 2007.

“Workers who are scheduled to work on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, or Easter Monday are entitled to double pay,” Singh explained. “This entitlement is part of the legal protections provided to employees who work on these designated public holidays.”

Furthermore, Singh clarified that employees who do not work on the public holiday itself but are scheduled to work the regular business days before and after the holiday are entitled to a single public holiday pay.

The Minister also reminded workers that if they are unable to work on the regular days surrounding the public holiday, they must provide valid reasons or a medical certificate in order to qualify for public holiday pay.

Singh stressed the importance of both employers and employees fully understanding the legal framework surrounding public holiday pay entitlements. “It’s crucial that both parties are well-informed about these regulations to avoid confusion and ensure workers receive their rightful benefits.”

To ensure compliance, Singh announced that the Ministry’s Compliance Team will be conducting on-site inspections at workplaces throughout the holiday period.

For further clarification, Singh encouraged workers to contact the nearest Ministry of Employment office or refer to the recently amended Wages Regulations and the Employment Relations (National Minimum Wage) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, which came into effect on April 1, 2025.
