In a recent Commons debate on tourism, Dudley MP Sonia Kumar urged her parliamentary colleagues to consider the town as the perfect destination for their Easter and summer holidays.
Kumar highlighted Dudley’s growing popularity, noting that the town attracted 9.6 million visitors in 2023, generating £447 million for the local economy. Despite this success, she emphasized the need for Dudley to be recognized as more than just a day-trip location.
“If you’re considering where to spend your Easter or summer holidays, I have the ideal spot in mind,” Kumar said. “Dudley offers something for everyone—whether it’s picking up a fossil, taking a boat trip, exploring iconic ‘Peaky Blinders’ filming locations, or feeding giraffes at the zoo.”
Kumar pointed out that Dudley, with its rich industrial heritage, is a key location for anyone interested in history and culture. “From the historic Dudley Castle and Black Country Living Museum to the scenic canals and limestone caverns, the town offers a wide range of experiences that make it a must-visit destination,” she added.
Kumar’s remarks came during a debate initiated by Mid Bedfordshire MP Blake Stephenson, where she also stressed the importance of expanding tourism efforts beyond traditional hotspots like London and coastal towns. She argued that towns with rich cultural and historical significance, such as Dudley, should receive more attention in government tourism strategies.
Tourism plays a crucial role in Dudley’s economy, supporting diverse jobs from retail to zoology, site management, and guiding services. Kumar called for a renewed effort to invigorate the sector and ensure that destinations like Dudley receive the recognition they deserve.
Additionally, Kumar noted that the Black Country Living Museum had a record-breaking year in 2023, drawing 380,000 visitors, including 53,000 students and schoolchildren, underscoring the growing interest in the area’s heritage and attractions.
With its vibrant mix of history, culture, and natural beauty, Dudley is positioning itself as an ideal choice for those looking to explore beyond the typical tourist routes this Easter.
