Newquay Mayor Councillor Drew Creek has reiterated his call for the town’s minor injury unit to return to a full seven-day service, highlighting the strain on local healthcare resources—particularly during peak tourist seasons.
During a recent meeting with the chair of Cornwall & Isles of Scilly NHS, Cllr Creek addressed the challenges faced by Newquay’s healthcare services. He emphasized that the town experiences a significant seasonal population increase, placing additional pressure on general practitioners, pharmacies, and other medical facilities.
“The seasonal influx of visitors creates unique challenges for our healthcare system,” Cllr Creek stated. “It is crucial that we have a fully operational minor injury unit to accommodate both residents and tourists.”
The meeting coincided with the government’s announcement of budget cuts to NHS England, including reductions affecting local healthcare leadership. As a result, firm commitments to reinstating full service at the minor injury unit were not provided. However, Cllr Creek assured residents that he remains in close contact with health authorities and will continue advocating for the unit’s full restoration.
“We understand the financial constraints, but our priority must be ensuring that local residents and visitors have access to the care they need,” he added.
Easter Preparations Underway
In addition to his healthcare advocacy, the mayor expressed optimism about the upcoming Easter holiday, with favorable weather forecasted for the region. He encouraged residents and visitors to take advantage of the various events planned across Newquay and advised them to check the Visit Newquay website for details.
“Easter is always a vibrant time for our town, and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors,” Cllr Creek said.
Harbour View Update
Local maritime observer Philip Trebilcock also shared positive updates from the harbour, noting calm seas, mild south-easterly winds, and an increase in marine life sightings, including small dolphins.
“It’s probably the best week so far,” Trebilcock said. “Spring must be here.”
He also highlighted the presence of lugworm casts, a prime bait for bass fishing, and the return of numerous boats to the water. Additionally, he mentioned that Play It Cool will be performing at the Rowing Club this Saturday at 9 PM.
