China Handles Over 2.8 Billion Parcels During Qingming Holiday

The State Post Bureau of China announced on Monday that over 2.8 billion parcels were processed during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday, which ended on Sunday. The surge in parcel volume highlights the growing demand for express delivery services during key seasonal events.

According to the bureau’s report, approximately 1.399 billion parcels were collected during the holiday, marking a 17% year-on-year increase. At the same time, 1.429 billion parcels were delivered, reflecting a 15% year-on-year growth in delivery volume.

The Qingming Festival, a time for commemorating ancestors and celebrating the arrival of spring, coincides with the peak season for spring tea harvesting in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. To support the delivery of fresh tea from local farmers, courier companies have tailored their services, offering parcel collection and packing assistance directly to tea producers.

Wang Peijuan, a local tea farmer, shared her appreciation for these services: “Every time these deliverymen come to our house, they help us pack the parcels and send them out very quickly. We really trust the post office. They come to collect parcels at my door every day.”

In response to increased demand during the holiday period, delivery firms expanded their logistics network by adding more road transport lines and boosting air transport capacity. The companies also set up additional portable delivery lockers and self-service courier stations to enhance time efficiency.

Liu Jiang, Director of the Strategic Planning Research Department at the State Post Bureau’s Development Research Center, emphasized the broader impact of the sector’s growth. “China’s consumer market continues to heat up, and consumption potential is being released at an accelerated pace. By reducing circulation costs, the express delivery sector has facilitated consumption upgrades and optimized the industrial structure, contributing to regional coordination and enhancing economic resilience,” Liu stated.

As the express delivery industry continues to evolve, its role in driving economic growth and supporting the burgeoning consumer market becomes increasingly significant.
